Stage one before mapping

I'm wanting to put a stage one air cleaner on my 2015 Street Glide and do it myself, then ride it to the dealership to have the mapping download. I'm only riding about 35 miles to the dealer so my question is will it run ok for me to get there? I know the dealership would charge me a bunch just to put the air cleaner on when I got there. I have 1000 miles on it, so I'm going to have them do the first service when I'm there. Trying to save some money is all. The dealer says I really shouldn't ride it without it, but such a short distance doesn't seen like an overkill. Any thoughts?

When you say stage 1 and letting dealer download a map....are you referring to using all SE parts? or are you referring to having Dyno done once you are at dealer for a map?

Unless you are using all SE parts and dealer is nice enough to share one of their previous map that was captured from another customer using SE parts then you may be in luck though not all bikes are exactly the same....otherwise they'll hit you up with 4 hours Dyno tuning for the map that will work best for your bike.

Depending on how lean your bike gets after swapping out air cleaner, if it's pining terribly then not a good idea to ride it out 35 miles to a dealer, if something happens they'll deny your warranty.

I was going to use a Screaming Eagle air cleaner. Seems simple enough to put on. Then let the dealer do the mapping download for my bike after riding it there. He said it will only take about 15 minutes (with a cost of $200 bucks). I'm not going to get it Dyno tuned.

The stock air cleaner set up has the potential to flow more air then needed. Without changing the mufflers you will not process more air then needed. To be honest the SE air cleaner set up is more looks then performance.

Without changing to a more free flowing exhaust system the re-mapping is a waste of time and money.

Wow, didn't realize that. This is my 5th Harley and have always had a stock air cleaner except back in 1998 on a Heritage. I do have Rinehart slip-ons on my Street Glide, but nothing new to the rest of the exhaust. I take it the Rinehart's won't change anything?

I would save your money and do all the same time.....meaning with full system so that way you will not have to pay another $400 for Dyno tuning on top of what they are going to charge you for 15 minutes $200.....that's INSANE......how can they rob someone like that? Save up and get full exhaust system to go with air breather and you should be good to go. Don't waste your money now....you'll thank all of us for this. :)

Spend $300 ... get an FP3 tuner and do it all yourself and save a wad of cash...$200 for a download? Wow.... get the FP3 and you are WAY better off

Rinehart will change the sound of your bike and a bit more air flow if you go with stock head pipes but you want to go with head pipes without cat so you'll have better flow, then with upgraded air breather you'll have more air flow through throttle body > engine then > exhaust.....your bike will thank you......that's of course with a good tuned map to go along with it.

Gunner and Spazz are right. I would forego the dealer download and get a real tuner like the FP3 that adjusts for all FUTURE mods as well.

Thanks for all the info guys. Think I'll wait and get the FP3 tuner. Sounds like the way to go and would save a lot of cash.

I agree 100 %. The stock air cleaner flows very well up to 5200 RPM which is about the top end rpm range of the cam. As soon as a high flow air intake starts to show its benefit by inducting more air the cams need for air tapers off so it's a moot point. Install a nice set of mufflers and ride.
I do not disagree with the need for a tuner starting at stage 2 but for stage 1 the HD download is a perfect match. The vin specific ECM download increases the rev limit point to 6200 which is a moot point because of the cam limitations, but more importantly it loads a new timing map while keeping the correct AFR. This gives the bike a bit more snap and I believe it will run a bit cooler also. I know plenty of folks that have a Stage 1 with high flow SE type intake and just have the HD download and are plenty happy, myself included. When I'm riding with folks that have both download and tuner there seems to be very little performance advantage either way!
Now, if you plan to change head pipes, cams, etcetera, then check out a tuner.

BTW. Not trying to step on any toes here. Just that for some folks who know for sure that there are no future mods past the Stage 1 AND don't want to piss around with a tuner for any number of reasons can benefit from the HD download.

Blues,

You are not stepping on toes by any means... but having the experience wasted on a download, then a tuner was a BIG eye opener for me. I went from a download to a tuner and the difference was VERY noticeable. I only wish that when I made this mistake, the FP3 was available and it wasn't.

For the extra $100 or so he would spend on the FP3 over the download, it is worth every penny considering the fact the versatility and ease of use...not to mention the ability to make minor changes if need be to the tune... throttle response, rev limiter, decel pop... just to name a few.

My 120ST has a download and I can tell you that it's not up to where it should be by any means.... and they tell me that it's all I need.... NOT!!!!

I already have the wide open air filter, and now I'm waiting on my Python Rayzer and FuelPak from Jeff. Would a cam be the next step for the best power upgrade?

Ok I'm not the high tech guy here but when I bought my bike I had them install the screaming eagle air kit and V&H slip ons and they through in the down load. Installed the power duals and the FP3 at the same time and what a world of difference. Wish I would have put the FP3 on sooner to get the benefits it gives you. It's really easy to use and the support from V&H is really good. Helps to have Spazz on speed dial also lol.

Just my 2cents
