Slip On Install

Ok, I showed great restraint by not putting my new CFRs on last night after the UPS guy showed up late last night.

I've seen a few videos and this install does not look too tough. I'm looking for advice on pit falls and the such. Also, where do I find the torque specs for the bolts?

Thanks!

There really are no pitfalls. Only thing I would add is to keep the bolts loose first when BOTH sides on (take both bags off, not one at a time), then go the rear of the bike to line up the tips. On mine, the left side wouldn't slip on as far as the right, so that is what I measured off of.

Also, on just about any Harley bolt, I'd recommend investing in a tube of Blue Loctite. Might as well learn how to prep the bolts, let dry, even some grease. Torque specs can be all over the map if not put in with grease/bolt prep anyway. You don't really need to do this on the exhaust hanger bolts because of the design, but again, good practice since new to wrenching on a Harley.

I'm used to loc tite blue and prefer it as a gel so there is no dry time. What grease goes with it?

Grease doesn't matter - I personally use Phil Woods from CA (actually used in the bicycle world) to get proper torque, minimize cross threading, etc. Works great and has that cool blue-green classic look and smell ;-)

I just put on V&H slip ons last night. Front bolt 40 lbs and the rear is 12 I think. Sound good and took a few hours because of breaks I took because its so damn hot in texas still

I just realized that after using loc tite for as many years as I have, I still have a question. Whenever I have stubborn fasteners, I apply heat. This is especially useful if I know red loc tite was used. Wouldn't the heat of the exhaust over a long ride do the same thing?

The other question is how much cleaning of the new mufflers is required prior to starting the bike? Is a simple wipe down ok or do I need to do a full blown polishing?

Thanks again for putting up with me. I will keep you all updated as I am going to do this tomorrow.

I dont think you need to polish it, but you need to clean it (good wipe down maybe) well enough to remove greasy, oily fingerprints and smudges.
Great work- looking forward to hearing about your finished project.

OK, here it is. I don't think there is much need to post pictures, but it is done. Here are my thoughts in no particular order.

1. HOLY CRAP THAT WAS EASY! Really HD dealer? You wanted to charge me almost $200 to install two slip ons? I did it during half time of the Dallas game today. By the way, Dallas sucks! Sorry, I had to work that in as a Redskins fan.
2. The sound is effing amazing.
3. I bit the bullet, spent the $60, and bought the service manual which has all of the torque settings.
4. I used the blue loc tite that comes in a lipstick tube.
5. I used a dry microfiber cloth to wipe the mufflers down before firing it up. Fingerprints etc just wiped right off and I was able to see what was meant.

Questions:
Are they called mufflers or slip ons? Are the words/terms interchangeable?
I now have condensation primarily in the right (when looking from the rear forward) muffler. Is that normal?
I have a much heavier exhaust smell in my garage. Prior to this there was none. Is this since there is next to no baffling?
Is replacing the head pipes just as easy?
What does one do with old stock mufflers?

I will take some pictures tomorrow and try and get a decent recording of the sound as well. It might be interesting for others like me that only want a sound and not everything else at first.

Thanks again guys.

Way to go Yegg, They are called slip ons but in reality-they're mufflers!

You keep all your stock parts so that when you sell it, you can give the new owner a big pile of parts for him to store in HIS garage!

Except when you trade in a bike. I still have stock parts to my old ZX10R that I had 10 years ago. lol

What slip on did you go with? I just installed the oversize 450 and the sound changed very little from stock. Looks awesome, always getting compliments. The smell will go away as the new burn in for fiberglass and anti corrosion is what I am assuming is burning in. I'm hoping when I go with power duals the sound will improve.

I went with CFR FL001Cs.

The first picture shows it installed with the bag removed.
The second gives you a rear view.
The third shows what I think is a "normal" inside view.
The last one is what I think is a result of condensation. Is it? Do I need to take special care of it?

The sound is AMAZING. I tried to take a video and get the sound but it did not do justice to it.

Good job and pretty easy as you found out. They look awesome and happy your pleased with the sound.

For a newbie like me what brand is the CFR's?

To really get the most out of the mufflers, you gotta get a good set of head pipes (which also get rid of the catalytic convertors). That is where the performance change is at.
