Simple Tuner

I call BS on that dealer. Just trying to sell you more stuff.
The CFR's are extremely free flowing and have a reputation for being hard to tune, most likely they do mot provide enough back pressure as a result of the mild, low RPM friendly, cam provided in the stock HD engine. IMHO CFR muffs are more suitable for a stage 3 or 4 engine.
The HD Street Cannons, HD air intake, and vin specific ECM download is a proven combo that makes the bike run well and efficiently. It's All that's needed for a very street able bike typically about 82-3 hp and around 98-100 tq

Good info Bluesbelly. I can definitely tell the bike runs a lot better with that SE setup

What is the Harley Tax?

Harley Tax=
The thousands of $$$$$&$$$ you will spend after the initial purchase of the Bike. Ranges from go fast parts to chrome bling, and all the other junk you think you need on your bike to make you comfortable, highly visible, and most of all a COOL DUDE!
Also includes boots, coats, vests, rain suits, helmets, shirts, extended warranty, insurance, and inflated service fees.

That Harley Tax is a mutha....but we glady pay it.

Thanks t8ness. I basically have the same setup but with CVO muffs and Fuelmoto air intake. Bike runs great and mileage is 45-47 on an easy day. I will say that IMO the free flow allows more air flow through the engine and the cat seems to be a tad cooler. No proof. Just speculation.

BluesBelly, based on that information, the way I read it, it is in fact a good idea to pair those slip ons with a tuner. Is that a correct statement?

Yegg,
I have only heard the sound of CFRs and so I'm careful to say that only what I have read points to the fact that they are hard to tune when using a tuner and they may run great on a stock bike. I think they sound really cool! It might be worth your time to investigate and by all means post your findings. HD slip ons as well as Reinhardt, Bassani, Vance & Hines, and others do not require a tuner if just the slipon muffs are added to a stock bike so the CFR muffs should be the same. No tuner needed for just the muffs. It is pretty common knowledge that a muffler core much bigger than 2" on a stock bike may adversely affect back pressure. After you get the CFRs on the bike let us know how you like them and how they work.

I am not a mechanic, ever after staying in a Holdiay Inn Express! hahahaha I just want that awesome sound (specifically from CFRs). What would/could I cause problem with if I do not put a tuner on with the CFRs? Do you, or anyone else who may chime in, think 50 -100 miles with no tuner is acceptable? What would I look for to determine that I do in fact need a tuner? Is it the "popping" noise on deceleration that is an indicator? I am sure that I will do head pipes and air cleaner in the future. Based on that, I know I will need a tuner.

Another semi dumb question is this: Has anyone hooked up a tuner to a stock (head pipes, air cleaner, and mufflers) ride? Would it help a completely stock bike?

If you think that a tuner is the way to go then by all means throw one on the bike. Stock bikes may benefit from a tune. There are three ways to go with the tuners 1) preprogrammed or canned tune based on the mods you have made (this includes the HD ECM dealer flash) 2) using a tuner with an auto tune feature. 3) spending $$$ on a dyno tune.
Again. No tuner needed with just a muffler swap.
Deceleration popping does not reflect the state of the tune and is not harmful to the engine

Yegg,
I just did a Google search "problems tuning CFR mufflers". Lots of info to read. Seems that the early CFR mufflers were indeed hard to tune due to insufficient back pressure. The good news is that CFR claims to have fixed the issue by a redesign of the baffle and the new model mufflers are much better.
My appologies for passing out dated information.

No worries. Like I said, I got lots of conflicting information; even from Harley dealers. I think I am going to get the mufflers put on at my 1000 mile check up and see if I hear any popping when i decelerate. If I do, I will get a tuner ASAP. If not, I will get a tuner when my wife is not looking. As of right now I am leaning towards the V&H FP3. I will keep you guys updated. My mufflers come in tomorrow but it will probably be another week or two until I actually hit my 1000 miles and can get the bike in. That will be a very long time with the slip ons sitting in my garage.

I went ahead and put them on today. Cake walk. No tuner yet. I will probably see what is left over next pay day. The sound is awesome.

From Mojos for what its worth department:
I did the SEPST and a Dyno on this bike. If I did another? I'd go with an FP3.
