Partially drill out baffles?

I really want to get some new pipes but my wallet says no. I was thinking of drilling a 1/4-1/2" hole thru the baffle to add a little more flow and bark to the pipes but I was wondering if any of you have tried this method and can speak to its success. Im not looking for straight pipe sound levels but if I can add a little more bark (and air flow) it would definitely be a bonus.

Comment or advise away. This will probably be a stop gap until I can afford some slip ons

Have you removed the catalytic converter yet? I would do that and then take a large punch and drive the tabs in the center of the muffler in to let a little more noise out.

Yep. See my post above. I've done it to several bikes. My brand new '94 Nostalgia, an '01 Police Bike, an '09 Streeglide and I just did a set of old touring mufflers that I put on the '15 Streetglide... with turnouts.
As mentioned, bend the tabs in on the later mufflers. .. I used an old piece of rebar & a hammer.

Don't open them up too much. You need some back pressure to prevent popping on deceleration. See explanation in this post.

De-catting the head pipe will significantly reduce the temperature to you passenger's right foot and help your inner right thigh. Some sound change, too.
Probably doesn't improve performance substantially.
I used B&E Performance ... he removes cats from stock head pipes and you get to keep your stock head pipes. I think it was $135 shipped to my door. He's on ebay.

Thanks for the link! I can see the metal you pushed open in both my mufflers so I think I'll knock it open. A piece of 1/4" rebar should give some more bite and still maintain a good amount of pressure. I'll agree that losing bottom end isn't really my cup of tea, especially as a daily commuter.

I've always been on the fence about xied's but I have no plan on changing cams. I'm exploring intake options now. Someone mentioned it might work to cut out the back of the stock cleaner housing, and I'm looking to get a higher flow filter as mine was already dirty and full of debris

OK so I opened up the end cap a bit today. I started conservative and just split it enough for maybe a 1/4" gap between the metal leafs (for lack of a better term) and the difference was pretty small. I smacked it open a little more than now it's great. Bike still pulls off the line and has some good volume when I crank it up. Thanks again for the suggestion, when my wallet allows I'm going to get a k&n filter and xieds.
