Oil in Air Cleaner Housing

Many including myself have seen a decrease in AC oil by putting in 3.5 quarts of Oil instead of 4 as HD recommends when doing an oil change. I have been doing that for years and no issues.

Just curious.....Is it possible that the increased air flow coming in with the K&N air filter causes more oil to be pulled in that can't be burned off or is residual in air breather tube?

The air filter/cleaner will provide no more air to the motor then it can process. Fact is a stock HD air filter/cleaner will provide all the air needed.

Exactly. Save the money you would spend on an air filter and reroute the breather.

The true problem with oil in your air filter is that the crank case vents into the intake plate. Basically, the intake is sucking the oil gases/mist back into the motor. We don't want this, by any means.

Running a half quart low will not fix this neither. That is a cracker jack excuse of a fix from Harley. You can also blame the EPA for having to have the CC vented into the intake.

Here is what I did. This is on a 2013 SG with the SE high flow intake.

What you will need

2 x 1/8th by 1/4th hose barbs
2 x 10-24 set screws
1 x 1/8th npt tap
1 x 21/64th drill bit
1 x 1/4th T barb
couple feet of 1/4th hose

Drill a hole on the underside of the intake where the bolts run to the heads. One on each side. Then tap your holes.

Run the set screws into the holes in the breather. No tapping needed. Put some red lock-tight on the set screws and run'em in.

Your end result.

I have seen some guys get fancy with this and get braided lines, and such. I wasn't that concerned on how it looked but I did hide it the best I could. No more oil in the breather and no more oil mist getting sucked into the intake and causing all the carbon build up on top of the pistons. Your bike will run better.

I tried to look up the the fuelmoto plate but if it looks anything like the harley SE plate you can do the above. You can do the same with the Arlen big sucker as well.

With you being in Cali, I would be cautions on doing something like I did above. Not sure if they emission bikes yet but if they do, this could cause you to fail emissions testing.

I have a 2014 SGS and never had an oiling problem with the air box, I wonder why some (Rushmore) bikes seem to do it.

Hey mudflap, Are you just using 1/4" hose then?

So just to make sure, you are just drilling and tapping a 1/8" npt thread into the bottom of the round part and then running the hose out to the bottom near the frame? Any filter on the end of it at all

Yep, 1/4th hose and no filter. You could probably get smaller fitting and such but I just got what was at Napa. Hose runs down by the back of the oil pan. I did have it running between the jugs down between the trans and primary. You could put a catch can or filter on it if you wanted but it's kindah a one way system so nothing could get sucked up in there.

Awesome. Going to have to try this. Thanks for the write up!!!

Please excuse my ignorance, but doesn't oil come out of that hose and deposit on the underside of the bike, as well as the back tire causing a dangerous riding condition??

No. It's not like it's a constant mist.

And there are ways to do this without tapping anything. I have a whole post of how I did it but since I'm on a little phone not fun trying to find. Post is probably over a year old.

Here is his write up. http://streetglide.com/showthread.php?2517-My-14-SG-Crankcase-Breather-Re-Route-with-Stock-AC

Im guessing this was on a stock air box? Correct? The OP doesn't have a stock air box set up.

Another route to go would be to get the older style plate bolts, http://www.jpcycles.com/product/401...ZK7ICiMr-cYEWQPXgmMvb6PT_MGH_RvqxgRoCZnrw_wcB Put a hose on the end of it and away you go. You would still have to block the passage to the intake tho.

Those bolts maynot work with a stock box tho.

I want to thank everyone for their input. I purchased and installed the Vance and Hines VO2 Air Intake Grenade. It looks bad ass and sounds great. I will send a pic tomorrow.
