Noise?

Anyone finding bikes noisy?
If so what was the cure ? I did read the exhaust comments but few of us here to many noises
Find any ? Any cure ?

The V Twin is noisy by nature. The rocker boxes are only 3 feet from your ears. Windshields/fairings and lowers make the noise sound even louder.
 
The only difference I noticed with the HO 103 is at idle. The idle dips from time to time at idle and makes a "clanking" noise. Other than that, I don't hear any other noise out of the ordinary. I know some people mentioned the HO cams but I don't really know if that's it. To me, it sounds like a timing issue but that's my uneducated guess. I have almost 30K miles now and no reliability issues.
 
Sounds like this may be the thread I am looking for. I have been riding big twins for about 20+ years now but this is my first Harley. I have a 2016 FLHX and I notice clatter in the top end that starts at 2000 rpm and continues till about 2500 rpm, then mostly disappears. . I noticed the day after I bought it and took it back to the dealer to ask if it was normal. They had a tech take it for a ride and he came back and said he did not hear anything that was not "normal". I have yet to run into someone with the same scoot to compare with. I usually have the music rockin' while I am rollin' and don't normally hear it but sometimes as the music level drops.. I can hear it there... I keep reminding myself that that dealer said it was normal, and I turn the music up more..lol...
Mostly, I try to keep the RPM above 2500 or below 2000.. but my actual comfort range for easy cruising usually ends up in the 2000-2500 range.

So, I ask.. of you other 2014 and newer SG riders, Is this normal?
Please tell me it is so I can get back to enjoying the ride.. lol..
 
I often wonder about the noise and whether it's been there since I bought the bike new. My local HD techs checked it out and told me it's normal...they also said some are noisier than others, but it was nothing out of the ordinary. I do think it became more noticeable when I switched to synthetic oil at the 1K mile checkup and also when I installed the 8" LRS windshield (I assume I hear more engine noise because I hear less wind noise).

By the way, my local Harley dealer has a sign posted on their door that states if your engine seems noisier during the hot summer months, try HD 60 SAE oil.

I bought a 2014 with 2600 miles on it. I hear the same noise. I have had Honda's, Suzuki's, etc. But the HD is the noisiest on the top side of any bike i have heard. But from what I am told it's 100% normal. She's just a beast!!! I actually like it as other posters have said. I love the way if sounds and feels. I think the jap bikes work too hard on making things smooth. I want something a little less refined. But from what I have heard, HD totally makes the bike do this on purpose. It's why we buy HD's! LOL...enjoy and ride on brother! The bike is good and you will get more miles out of it than you can ride. :)

How can you get 30k around those small islands ! Been to Maui and Kauai.. Must be a great place to ride..
 
Thanks for the info guys.. I feel a hell of a lot better knowing that the noise is normal. It's been a bit of a stress over the last couple months. Paying that much money for a new scoot and having that gnawing feeling that something in the engine is not right but the dealer says "I don't hear anything..." Was almost getting to the point where I thought I made a huge expensive mistake by makign the purchase of my SG. Reading everyone's comments and reassuring me that its normal has allowed me to get back to enjoying the ride and my beautiful Crushed Ice Pearl SG. (She def turns heads and gets a lot of double takes once they get a good look at that paint in direct sun!!!

Also, After I posted here, I found the solution to that noise. Turns out that it is very common but not exactly "Normal" N2DEEP hit on it above as well.
There is a thread on here that explains the problem, What is actually making that tick, and a remedy to get rid of it. I will be ordering a kit ASAP and doing the fix as soon as I have a rain day and have the time to get into the top end. Can't wait to hear her purr after the fix.

My first HD too ..... When I drove my SGS back from the dealer late yesterday afternoon I started hearing interesting noises and was somewhat alarmed at first but decided to wait until later today after I get out of work and give it a real good listen in case I think I need to get back to the dealer and get their response.

My other bike is a 2010 MV Agusta F4 and needless to say it is a completely different ride.

So I'm going to let things settle down a bit and read more of these and any other forum posts on the subject before I jump to any conclusions about this bike.

It is a sweet ride though .....

UPDATE:

Okay, I've had my bike just over two weeks and the other day I started hearing an unmistakable tick just after starting the bike so I shut her down.

The next day I started her again only this time no ticking sound. So I took her for a short ride around the block .... I hear no ticking. Then, about 1/2 way through my ride, I was in 1st gear, about 15 MPH, just above 2K RPM and I could hear it plain as day. It was very noticeable too ..... The dealer wants me to bring the bike in and have Service take a look ....

To me it wasn't one of those sounds I would normally want to hear coming from the engine of my bike ....

I installed the Rocker Lockers in my top end during the 107 build and it's very quiet. I couldn't be happier.
