break in question

I asked this in another forum but did not get a real response so I will try here.

I made a dumb mistake and lugged the engine with about 10 miles on it during break in.

What happened was I was at a parking lot and stopped already and tried to shift to neutral and must have shifted to 3rd, I stepped on the shifter and thought I was in first when I took off again. it started moving but I knew I must have been in a higher gear and had to start shift down.

It's been bothering me and I hope I did not do any damage. Other than that mess up i've followed the break in guide lines. Is it possible I did any damage this early?

Thanks for the help.

I would think only your pride :)
But the more technical guys will chime in.

Could be worse. In my rattlesnake days I got drunk and drug home an ugly girl.

These engines are tuff, I have been in the wrong gear many times and have never done any damage.

Don't sweat it... it's not like you flogged it with a full throttle... your motor will be fine.

My guess more than once! Ha
I'll have to say I've had my scary moments.. If only I had a cool Harley to get the pretty girls....... Had a Honda

First of all JohnnySeven there is probably a 99999.9% chance that you didn't do any damage to anything but your ego :D

On a related note I have always failed to understand why Harley is always so adamant on not running the engine hard (past 3000 RPM or probably 40% power) at all during the break-in period???

I have owned airplanes (which are large displacement air cooled engines BTW) and the break in procedure for new engines/cylinders is to run the hell out of it.....run at no less than 75% power (when possible) for the first 25-50 hours.....this is completely counter to how Harley would have you break in your bike.....How can you really get the rings to set....Hmmm!!

All I know is that I've never had an issue with airplane engines, I have broken in all my air cooled motorcycles the same way and have never had an issue....the only constant in both applications is to try and not stay at the same RPM for extended periods of time.......Anyone with any quantitative data you can provide here......other than "if Harley says that's the way to do it then it must be right" :D

Thanks a lot fellas, I'm sure I was over thinking it. My pride can be repaired, It took a long time to get a bike like this. Oh and ugly girls need love too!
