So I just ordered Full Boar straight cut mufflers with 2 1/2 baffles for my glide. They should arrive next Thursday and then I will plan for a whole day to play Harley.. I am going to install the muffs, the de-catted head pipe, and the vied's all at once. I am gonna see how it runs this way before getting an air filter upgrade. I figure that with the free flowing exhaust and richer fuel mixture it should run cooler and sound sweet ! total of only $465.00 spent so far and think it will be fun to install. I got an extra set of header gaskets just in case I need to replace mine but with just over 1k I hope I don't have too. I also got some anti seize for the 02 sensors. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Fallguy- You should be OK with your stock exhaust gaskets if you're careful. The stock air filter flows really well so you should be just fine there. As far as the Vied, I would adjust it to 75% for starters. Run it for awhile and check the color of your pipes and plugs. later you might want to change to a good auto tuner like the V&H FP3 etc. and the SE air filter if your so inclined. It should net you a louder and deep throaty tone when your done - good luck!

Things I learned - this is all from personal experience on my SG.
I was fine reusing my header gaskets. Stay away from the SE gaskets, they leak, use stock. If you need to replace the gaskets best to have a tool like Jim's to help with.
FP3 is great, I have not even auto tuned yet and the bike runs great.
Just replacing pipes and doing a tune gives a nice gain in power - no notice in difference with air filter changed too. I still have stock air filter and picked up 3 more stock for $20 to my door on ebay just to have when mine gets dirty because replacing with oil based filters like K&N just lets more dirt in.
Re-route your breather so it breathes to the air instead of blowing the hot oily fumes back into the motor.

I'll add what ever tuner you buy get it from Fuel Moto then you can always request new maps if you decide to change some thing or the map your using isn't quite right. Great benefit and support from them!

Thanks to those who shared thoughts. I got an extra set of the James gaskets just in case. Im gonna be as careful as a surgeon with the swap and wanted to richen mixture for cooling and to eliminate the lean condition along with the improved sound. I have looked at the fp-3 but thought for a while this should be sufficient at $230.00 less.

The new slip-ons arrived today now I have all the parts to make my total exhaust change. The FB muffs have the perforated looking metal baffle and I can see all the way through. The V&H muffs were similar. Starting to look forward to installing them so hopefully within 2 weeks. Any thoughts from anyone who has done a header change would be cool. I have watched many videos and have redone numerous car engines so I feel reasonably able.

Well I could not wait any longer so when it started to rain today I went to work in garage on exhaust swap. Between fix my hog video and the fuel moto video and the fl-vied video I felt ready to tackle the swap. Took my sweet a__ time and tried not to miss anything ! The hardest part was sinking the new headers in the exhaust ports and trying to be nice to the existing gaskets.. Didn't work until I had to replace the rear gasket and then loosened the bottom frame bracket where headpipe connects to it at the place below where the two pipes come together.i have a very short allen bolt thing that a 1/4 inch wrench went on to snug the bracket, with the headpipe in place. I have the vied's at 50% and will run around 500 miles and then check plugs. It took a lot longer idling in garage to start killing the rear cylinder this time than 2 days ago and the garage actually smelled a bit gassy from exhaust. But I have to say that it rev's faster bumping throttle and HOLY CRAP those Full Boar Muffs with 2 1/2 baffles and no cat sounds AWESOME !! I cant wait to get it on the highway and for the ECM to get adjusted to the changes. Now if anyone would explain 1 thing to me please? Will it always say CAT in my radio screen now ?
Thanks

I took it out today for a highway test and noticed a couple of things :
It was at 2900 rpm at 70 mph 6th gear but now its at 2600 rpm at 70 mph 6th gear.

It seems to have half as good gas mileage.

From 3000 rpm - 4500 rpm its waaayyy stronger but same on bottom end.

Sound is audible but nice at highway speeds.

I think I will do an a/c before any vied's adjustments.

Here are pics of back plug after 50 miles ride today. Seems the top isn't quite as white as before and underside by electrode is blacker. Please share educated opinions with me regarding air/fuel/mix.photo (279).jpgphoto (280).jpg

I put on a stage-1 a/c today and almost seemed a little spitty at low rpm's but upper rpm's were real loud and nice pull. I don't want to hotdoggit much until I figure out that it isn't too lean still. I have the VIED 's set at 50% but think I will do the 75% you spoke of. I have done the full catless exhaust and a/c now. I just want it smooth and cool with no more upgrades. Do you have any suggestions about my changes ? I could really use some feedback from someone who has a grip on this stuff. J&P cycle support never even heard of the VIED's so no help there.

So I called the Nightrider people to ask a few questions about tuning. A guy named Steve was glad to spend nearly an hour discussing everything I could imagine from afr to spark plugs to temperatures to ecm learning and all about open and closed loop operation and everything else in the mix. Amazing tech support and good to know more about the vied's and dialing them in. He recommended I use a V-ROD , NGK spark plug for durability and its a 1 step cooler plug. Also suggested I go to 65% setting and ride for 2 hours and see if that settles in well. If not then go to other side with a 35%.. Simple dialing and patience to fine tune..

Hello out there.. I pulled out the 2 1/2 inch baffles today. ( quite a job )..Hope the 2 inch baffles arrive tomorrow as tracked so I can stick them in and give it a spin around.. After all that I was reading and the engine being stock except for a low budget stage-1 upgrade I realized I had a good bit too much exhaust going on. Hopefully the 2 inch will be enough backpressure to give me my bottom end back. I would really appreciate some input from those of you with ideas regarding my changes or thoughts on further tuning needs.
