Oil Cooler hose clamps...

Hi,

I did my first oil change on my 2015 FLHXS and had a bugger of a time getting the filter off as it was being blocked by the Oil Cooler hoses. On this bike it uses 2 clamps that have little tabs that have to be squeezed together to losen the hose off the nipple. I ended up using a pair of needle nose pliers to get the clamps off. Is there a special tool to do this and if so what is it called?

Thanks,

If you get the this wrench ... it's the easiest way to remove the oil filter without having to mess with anything else... got mine at the dealer for $20

Also pick up a Pig Form-a-Funnel no mess way to change your fluids... amazon has them for around $13

I use the same filter wrench as Hulkss. If you want to go the easy route and have money to waste, you can get the K&N filters with the nut welded to the end. Generally that first filter change is the toughest, HD doesn't understand the words "hand tighten" !

That's for sure. I just did my first oil change (dealer first change at 1000 mi) and the big socket wrench "ratcheted" over the flats on the filter can it was on so tight. I managed to get it off with a strap wrench and a cheater bar. The H-D socket filter wrench works fine at proper torque levels.

I also had to put my big torque wrench on the drain plug to get it out! No more dealer service for me.

BTW get yourself some O-rings for the drain plugs. Mine were mutilated.

I always keep a few of the o-ring/gasket kits handy for fluid changes. The orange Derby cover gasket doesn't like being used twice!

I use this wrench from H-D: P/N 94863-10 $10.95

Hulkss I have the same wrench you and Mojo are using but for some reason it seemed to be just a hair bigger than the filter. I used this wrench for years on my old FLHT which uses the same filter. The replacement filter I had purchased from the dealer fit the new filter just fine (which are the same ones I've always used on my bikes). Could it be that the one from the factory is just a bit smaller? or maybe I just got one built on a Friday afternoon.

Mojo I have the flat circular gasket on mine and I'm assuming you do too but maybe they changed it for 2015. Mine is grey/black color. I was disappointed to see it though as I still had a spare old style orange rubber one from my 2008 FLHT. My FLHXS' gasket looked brand new when I took off the derby cover so I just re-installed it. It's been fine for about 600Km (370mi) so far. I did have a spare on hand and will definitely change it next time. The filter was a bugger to get off. It really was on there tight. Thanks MOCO

Spazz I’ve never seen this type of wrench around here, at least not at the dealer but maybe I’ll have to ask. I have the oil filter funnel from H-D which works pretty good but the Form-A-Funnel looks handy.
