JW Speaker headlamp install, this should've been easy!?

My brand-new JW Speaker 8700 Evolution 2 headlamp is giving me problems.

When I initially turn the ignition on, the highbeam seems to work fine… then the highbeam will start to flicker and quickly dim out to nothing. The only thing I can do to bring highbeam back is to cycle the ignition switch off for about a minute, then I will get strong highbeam again very briefly before it starts to flicker and die out.

The only weirdness that I see in the equation so far is this: I bought the adapter from HD, part number 69200897. However the adapter that is actually in the box, is number 69200881. Could these monkeys have somehow mis-packaged my adapter??

Anybody ever seen this before?

If they have a customer support number, call them. It doesn't sound right to me either.

That part number is for the plug that is part of the adapter assembly.

Well gang, I found the problem: it was HD's wiring harness! I picked up another one, installed it… And everything works perfectly! Crazy stuff :)

The 8700 Evolution 2 headlamp looks awesome, I can't wait to test it at night.

You will like the light for night riding it really makes everything shine people seem to notice it better during the day also. Have noticed in the little bit I ride at night the critters really stick out when their eyes are lit up. Was wondering about that harness when you mentioned the different number on it or was there a bad wire.

So.... it turns out the saga gets even weirder. The harness was fine, not the culprit after all. It was something to do with the fact that the battery tender was hooked up when I was testing the headlight- some kind of over-volt condition that the LEDs didn't like, or maybe something with the charge frequency... PWM, maybe? Regardless, when I took it off the tender it worked just fine, and I took it for a quick 25 miles tonight and no errors.

I definitely need to adjust it up a bit, but so far I am very happy with this headlamp. Very bright (high beam is fantastic!), and it looks good with my Custom Dynamics signals.

So if anybody ever sees this, keep in mind that a battery tender might cause issues (Deltran unit in this case), possibly driving the voltage higher than the headlamp likes, or sending a charge frequency that causes errors.

Weird stuff!! :D

Thank for sharing with us you just never think about every little thing lol. Been there and done this on a couple things myself.

Just ordered the evolution 2. Looking forward to putting it in. Thanks for all the great info on this light. I couldn't say no after reading everyone's reviews

How is the light working for you now?

I got a video of mine acting up.

Any ideas yet as to why it is doing that?
