There is a knocking sound coming from my engine.

I have been doing everything the dealer told me to do while in the break in to 1,000 miles.

Let her run for a few minutes first start of the day. When cruising on the highway, switch between fifth and sixth gears every 8-10 miles.

I'm currently at 860 miles, and the last two days I have been getting a knocking sound from the engine. Usually in forth gear. I'm running it between 2200 and 3000 rpm.

Since I'm a new HD owner, is this normal? Should I be concerned? Should I take her in now?

If I'm missing something I will be happy to go into more detail. I hope this isn't what I think it is. I don't garage my bikes and bring them out on the weekends. I ride as much as possible to the point that this bike is my primary mode of transportation. So I would like to hear what you guys think.

I wish I could give you some advice to ease your mind. Is it consistent and ALWAYS within that range? Any abnormal 'knock' that you can hear at idle... or is it only under load? Try getting the RPM range the same in a different gear... maybe 5th ... see if you can replicate it in a different gear.

If it's only in that rpm range, try it at idle and see if you can hear it....

I would definitely bring it in to have it looked at...

On my 2013 Breakout.. I had a bad cam plate ( sticking relief valve ) at only 4000 miles.

Don't sweat bringing it in.... you want it to be PERFECT... just like they like your purchase money PERFECT.....

I have not ridden my new 2014 SGS (Minnesota weather sux this year), but my 2004, I always rode with a helmet and ear plugs. One day I went on a short ride with a half helmet and no ear plugs. The engine varied in sound from a sewing machine to a thrashing machine. I figured it must be normal as I never had any trouble before. The bike continued to run fine for the 10 years I owned it. The engine sounds much better when using ear plugs.
 
A quick diagnosis by dealer service dept will tell you if its normal engine noise or something more. Motorcycle engines are traditionally noisy especially with windshields and fairings.
 
In the shop right now getting it's 1,000 mile service. Service Manager said that there was not enough oil in the bike. So it appears that I rode it off the lot with it not being entirely road ready. Stay tuned.
 
Service manager showed me the plugs. Look like they came off an old lawn mower.
 
It was always where it was supposed to be.

The mechanic came out to talk to me. He is concerned that there is a compression issue and to keep an eye on the oil level for the next five hundred miles. Says it starts up and sounds good but it may burn more oil. If it goes lower I'll bring it in for them to switch out the heads. They think this is the way it came from the factory.
 
wow.... Sorry for you Perry.... Sounds like they will do good for you though if you have issues... keep us posted....

Do you recall what the PSI was? curious.... thanks
 
Took delivery of my Limited a few weeks back and I checked the oil level before I left the dealers lot and it was low by over a qt. they handled the issue and gave me a $250 parts dept credit for there screw up.


The only cure for stress is lots of miles on 2 wheels.
 
There's no reason why they shouldn't take care of the issue

Blkbrd, I was assured by both the dealership I bought it from and the one that I had it serviced at that I will be taken care of no matter what.

It would be nice to get the 250 credit Mike.

Sorry to hear about the bike but I know for a fact them boys up there at Yuba will take care of it and you will grow to love them. I have been dealing with them for about 10 years now and they are about 60 miles from me. And you know I have 2 dealers within 10 miles of me.

Jay, I was really impressed with Mike and his crew. I did stop in to Sac HD and made them aware of what happened. the service manager wouldn't even come out to see me. So there goes my impression of their service dept. especially since I was told they service all of their bikes before they put them on the floor. That why they either have 6 or 11 miles on them when they are sold. Mine had 11.
 
Perry,, checked mine running 80mph... 36psi. Idle about 30 psi...hmmmm

Spazz, I got out today, finally, and kept your worry in mind. Here's what I can tell you...

For the first 20 or so minutes, when I stopped at intersections, my oil psi was 30 or higher. At around 80 mph, my oil psi was around 34-40. So now I'm thinking that maybe the vied is causing a high idle psi. After riding for a bit, I checked my idle psi again. This time I was between 12-15 psi. Seems like maybe the bike needed some warm up miles. I really can't put my finger on it, but that's what happened with me.
